Happy Thanksgiving, 'n stuff. Music stuff mostly.

Who killed Amanda Palmer?

So I've been really crap about posting for the last week, but it's been kinda busy. Must mention going to see Amanda (fucking) Palmer at the TLA in Philadelphia. I feel a bit of a slacker, never having gone to any of the Dresden Dolls shows... can I site budgetary restrictions and get away with that excuse?

We got there a bit late, because Rob insisted they'd never open the doors before 9PM. They did, and therefore we only managed to see the last two songs from Vermillion Lies. Two sisters, cabaret style - think slide whistles and accordions. They seemed cute and fun - wish we'd seen more!

Next up was The Builders and the Butchers, who Rob described as a "scaled back Arcade Fire." I thought the did a really great live show, enjoyed every last bit of it. Definitely adding to the playlist.

It was nice to see that the crowd really appreciated both of these bands, there's nothing worse than a surly audience waiting for the main act. (Have I been to too many punk shows?)

Amanda didn't make us wait long (yay!). Appearing with her was an Australian theatrical troupe, The Danger Ensemble. The intro was a recorded message from the always lovely Neil Gaiman, who did a bit of a eulogy. So there's a photo book they're doing together to go along with the album... but it won't be out 'til early next year (giving my wallet time to recover from the holidays).

The set consisted of mostly songs from "Who killed Amanda Palmer." There were a few Dresden Dolls songs thrown in for good measure (yay for "Coin Operated Boy"). Not to mention a very funny lip sync by all to Rihanna's "Under My Umbrella," and an audience sing along to a BonJovi tune... don't ask me which one, I'm not from Jersey!

I think it was 1AM by the time things wrapped up, so the $20 ticket price was well invested. Some day I'll remember to take my camera along to these gigs so I can get photo documentation...

Oh well!

shit + fan

The Good - Accreditation is done.
The Bad - Accreditation is done.

The Good - I'll be out of the office a good part of this week.
The Bad - It's Diana McW's last week, and I won't get to see her much.

The Good - I've got tickets to see Amanda Palmer on Saturday at the TLA.
The Bad - South Street on a Saturday night... can you say "trendy, annoying bastards."

The Good - I'm on vacation all next week.
The Bad - I'll be spending it working on stuff around the house.

Ok, that's still kinda good... :)

Russell Brand, Comedy Central and Rainy NY Nights.

So Rob & I trekked to NYC last night to see Russell Brand perform at the Museo del Barrio... (can you say "Nursery rhyme murals on the walls! Cool beans!" and "No decent restaurants within walking distance!").

Seriously funny man. And pure sex in chelsea boots. Yum.

And they filmed for Comedy Central (now say "Nobody's allowed to pee for the next three hours! Stay in your seats!") There's nothing that makes me want to urinate more than telling me I have no access to a bathroom.

Kind of fun to see how they do the audience shots - as in before Russell even took the stage. "Ok, clap now - wild applause!" "Laugh, huge guffaws please!" "Now laughter into applause!" "Very good, you all get a cookie." (No actual cookies were promised, or received.)

Come to think of it I didn't even get a fortune cookie with my Chinese take-out. I feel somewhat deprived now. But seeing Ol' Russ made up for it.

It was a really fun, and I wanted to stay and meet him afterwards, but the 3 hour drive in the rain with the promise of accreditation wrap up scheduled for today spurred me home. (Shouldn't have bothered - crap meeting. Would have had more fun sleeping in central park and catching pneumonia. But that's another post that will never happen.)

I'd describe the show in more detail, but you might as well watch it when it airs on Comedy Central! Seriously, watch it. You might see me in the sixth row.

Hopelessly addicted to Mr. Bird's music...

Just a taste from Andrew Bird's upcoming album, Noble Beast. Hope this means a tour in the new year that will bring him back around to the East coast!

Tap tap... tap tap... tap tap...

I voted early this morning (GO OBAMA!!!), and waited an hour in line (happily) for the privilege. Anxiously awaiting the results...

In the meanwhile trying to concentrate on work, but trolling the blogs and twitter for news... this just about made me cry... (in a good way).
